No one is better at playing dress-up than Lavender Diamond. Several years ago, when I lived in Los Angeles, we dreamed up this concept for one of her songs: a video inspired by the portrait photoprahy of Madame Yevonde and Seydou Keita. I've always loved their pictures. But when I look at them I tend to think about the moments before the photo was snapped: the subject's adjustments, their subtle movements, poses, eyes, posture, the wind...
We designed and assembled props, dresses, and backdrops and then shot this over the course of a sunny day on a small terrace in Echo Park. We were lucky that our friend Susanna was there to make lovely photographs, and I include some of them below.
